The stone archway is a unique architectural form in China. They were usually erected at the entrance to a town, or a street. Stone archways were built to honor individuals who made great contributions to the dynasty, or who were considered role models. The design and construction of each arch had to follow a rigid hierarchy. The number of pillars that supported the arch, the words, and designs carved into them were closely associated with the status of the person honored.
　　The Tanyue Memorial arches is a set of seven arches built by the Bao family of Shexian Town during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. They are built along a curving road leading to Shexian Town. The seven arches represent the moral rules set by the family for their descendents: loyalty, filial piety, moral integrity, and righteousness. The Tanyue Memorial Arches are the biggest existing and best preserved complex of arches in Anhui Province. Three of the seven arches were built during the Ming Dynasty, and the remaining Four were built during the Qing Dynasty. The oldest arch was built during the reign of the Yongle Emperor (Reign 1402–1424). Although they have a long history, the architectural style is a successful combination of old and new. The seven arches include the Baocanxiao Memorial Arch, the Cixiaoli Memorial Arch, the Jiexiao Memorial Arch of Wang, the wife of Baowenling, the Kindness Arch, the Jiexiao Memorial Arch of Wu, the second wife of Baowenyuan, the Baofengchang Dutiful Son Memorial Arch, and the Baoxiangxian Shangshu Memorial Arch. All are memorial arches of the Bao families of Tangyue village.

　　Tangyue Memorial Archway is imposing with delicate carvings. The featured ancient ancestral temples, residences, and pavilions surrounded with capacious rural scenery and dainty landscape of mountains and rivers attract many visitors. The superb beauty makes it a popular shooting site for TV plays, such as A Dream in Red Mansions.
　　There are Qingyi Ancestral Temple and Dunben Ancestral Temple nearby. The ancestral temple was a place to worship the honorable women and men in the family of Baos. Nüci is particularly significant in studying the patriarchal clan system, because in China's feudal society, it was rare for women to have the privilege to be honored in an ancestral temple.
