Huashan mountain is a mountain located near the city of Huayin in Shaanxi province, about 120 kilometer east of Xi'an. It is the western mountain of the Five Great Mountains of China, and has a long history
Huashan mountain is famous for natural vista of steep and narrow paths, precipitous crags and a high mountain range. Its five peaks are the representative attractions and each has its distinctive charms: East Peak is the best place to enjoy the sunrise; South Peak has the highest altitude; West Peak is the most elegant; North Peak is famous as the Cloud Terrace Peak and Middle Peak is also called Jade Lady Peak.
The Mountain is also home to several influential Taoist temples, where many emperors of past dynasties took part in Taoist activities and sacrificed to the god of mountain, making it a holy land of Taoism.
East Peak (Facing Sun Peak) is 2096.2 m above the sea level, as one of the main peaks of Mount Huashua, seated at east. There is a platform on the summit of the peak, where is a good place to see the sunrise, with wild field of vision.
South Peak (Landing Wild Geese Peak) has an altitude of 2154.9 meters. It is also the highest peak among all the Five Mountains.
West Peak(Lotus FlowerPeak) has an altitude of 2082m. As the giant rock on the peak looks like petals of lotus, ancient literati also called it Lotus Peak and Furong Peak.
North Peak (Cloud TerracePeak) is 1614.9 meters high above the sea leave. The North Peak is solitary and imposing to the sky. As there is a Ruoyun Terrace, it is also name Cloud Terrace Peak.
Middle Peak(Jade Maiden Peak) is 2037.8 m high above the sea level. It is a small peak at west side of the East Peak. In ancient time, it was a part of East Peak, but now, people rank it as one of the main peak of Mt. Huashan.
North Peak, the lowest of the five, is the starting point for climbing. There are three ways to ascend: the six kilometer winding track from Huashan village, the cable car, or the path beneath it.
Next on the route is Jade Maiden Peak. Legend has it that a jade maiden was once seen riding a white horse among the mountains, hence the name. Then hikers can choose to take a left to Sunrise Peak, a fine place to enjoy the sunrise (which would involve climbing the mountain in the dark as there is nowhere to stay on the mountain).
Alternatively visitors can take a right to Lotus Peak.
The Highest, Most-Dangerous South Summit
Finally there is a gondola which takes visitors across a steep valley to Landing Wild Goose Peak, the highest among the five summits. The path to the summit includes a foot-wide plank walkway fixed to a sheer rock face with only a chain along the rock for support.
The South Peak is not for the faint-hearted and is particularly dangerous in winter. However, the views are breathtaking.
