Tiananmen Square

The Tiananmen Square on the north to south axis is at the center of Beijing city. It's the largest square in the world, encompassing an area of 14 hectares, and measuring 865 meters north to south, and 500 and 370 meters east to west on the northern and southern ends respectively.

The Five-Star Red Flag flutters high above the mid-point of the square's north side. Everyday,  at dawn and dusk, the Guards march in unison to the foot of the flagstaff to hoist or lower the National Flag, saluted with eyes by the on-lookers.

The Monument to the People's Heroes towers over the center of the square. To its south lies Chairman Mao's Memorial Hall. The Chinese Revolutionary Museum and the Chinese History Museum stand to the east of the square, the Great Hall of the People to the west and the magnificent Heavenly Peace Gate Tower to the north. The Tower is adjoined on its left side by the Zhongshan Park and on the right side by the Working People's Palace of Culture. Opposite the tower in the far south is the Zhengyang Gate Tower. These fine and unique buildings arranged in perfect harmony add greater beauty and grandeur to the Tianmen Square.

The Tiananmen Square is the people's square, where grand state ceremonies are held on important occasions.

Bell and Drum Towers

The bell and drum were originally used as musical instruments in China. Afterward, however, they were used for telling time. As early as in the Han Dynasty (206 BC-220), there was 'a morning bell and a dusk drum'. Telling the time by bell and drum played an important role in helping people live and work regularly when there was no other means to keep track of the time. As a result, bell and drum towers became public architectures, and were widely constructed in almost every city throughout the country since the Han Dynasty. In the history of their construction, the bell and drum towers of Beijing are the largest and highest. Their layout is unique, in that they were placed fore-and-aft, not as the traditional sense of standing right-and-left horizontally.

Lying to the north of Beijing-south axis line in Dongcheng District, the bell and drum towers are visibly prominent constructions and represent the symbol of this old city. They were built in 1272, and rebuilt twice after two fires. At one period in history they were the time-telling center of the capital city during the Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties (1271-1911).

Bell Tower

  Bell Tower

This brick and stone towers have two floors: there is an arched door on all four sides of the tower on the first floor, and you can go up to the second floor through stone stairs. The same exists on the first floor. An arched door was also built on the four sides of the second floor. Additionally, there is a stone window on each side of the four doors. Hanging on an eight-square wooden frame of the second floor, the bell in this tower is the largest and heaviest in China. It is 7.02 meters high including the pendants, with a weight of 63 tons. The bell was made of copper, and you can hear its round and clear sound from far away. The two 2-meter-long wooden logs hanging sideward are used to ring the bell.

  Drum Tower

Located 100 meters south to the bell tower, the drum tower was placed on a 4-meter-high stone and brick base. It is 46.7 meters high, a little bit lower than the bell tower that is 47.9 meters high. This tower is also a two-storey building; the first floor contains the China Committee for the Promotion of the Minority Art. The second floor contains the exhibition area. Originally, there was one big drum and 24 smaller drums, but only the big drum remains. The method of beating the drum is to beat it quickly for 18 times and then slowly for 18 times. Altogether there are three rounds and 108 tollings. People knock the bell and the drum 108 times, because 108 times represent one year in ancient times.

Drum Tower

Telling time by ringing the bell and beating the drum was abolished after Pu Yi, the last emperor of China, left the Forbidden City. Since the New Year's Eve of 1990, the sweet sound of the bell that had disappeared for a long time began to ring out in Beijing. Being drowsy for nearly a century, the drum was also beaten again on the New Year's Eve of 2001. It has been beaten four times a day, for 15 minutes at a time since January 1st in 2002. From then on, every New Year Eve, the drum is beaten with the bell 108 times to send a blessing to the people.

The area of the bell and drum towers has been flourishing since the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), when they were just standing behind the imperial palace. It was the busy downtown district there then, full of storefronts and businesses. Thanks to the further developing of the businesses, the street in front of the drum tower became the busiest shopping street in the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) Dynasties. During the Republican Period of China (1911-1949), many have-nots (impoverished people),along with merchants selling handcrafted items (handicraftsmen) and vendors selling snacks and local food items (snack stands) swarmed the place between the bell and drum towers, which attracted people from all walks of life at that time.Today, when visiting, you can climb onto the bell tower and drum towers to have a birds-eye view to admire the entire city, and even take part in the activity of knocking the bell and drum, appreciating all kinds of folk-customs, such as the dragon and lion dance, and other folk-custom exhibitions.

Houhai Lake

Located in the southwest of the Drum Tower in beautiful surroundings, Houhai Lake has a history of about 700 years in the Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368). It assumed its present name in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Strolling along its shoreline, the visitor can appreciate the lake’s glimmering blue water, its graceful weeping willows, its twisting railings and the flower-and-tree-covered central island. Pleasure boats are available for rowing and the banks are amply provided with shady places to rest. A swimming area in the lake is open every summer.

Houhai Scenic Zone, beginning from the Second Ring Road in the north to Ping'an Avenue in the south and from Di'anmenwai Street in the east to Xingjiekou Street in the west, is a paradise for tourists. It encompasses 146.7 hectares. The Zone is the only area in the city center where vast open waters, comprised by Xihai (West Lake), Houhai(back or Rear Lake) and Qianhai (Front Lake ) lakes, exist. More than 40 units for protection of historical relics are located there. They include the former residence of honorary president of People's Republic of China Soong Ching Ling(1893-1981); Guo Moruo(1892-1978) Museum, which is devoted to the famous writer, poet and historian; and Guanghua Temple.

Beijing Olympic Park

Beijing Olympic Park is where the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and Paralympics took place. The park was designed to contain ten venues, the Olympic Village, and other supporting facilities. Afterward, it was transformed into a comprehensive multifunctional activity center for the public.

National Stadium also known as the Bird's Nest is a stadium in Beijing. It hosted the opening and closing ceremonies, athletics, and football finals of the Games. The stadium has room for 91,000 spectators, but the capacity was reduced to 80,000 after the Olympics. It will be the site of the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2022 Winter Olympics. It was made of strong steel with natural curves and crossing lattices, it seems like a giant cradle and nest for impregnating life. Total structures of inside and outside for the stadium is neoteric and simple.

The Beijing National Aquatics Center "Water Cube" hosted the swimming, diving and synchronized swimming events. It has a capacity of 6,000 (17,000 during the 2008 Olympics) and is located next to the National Stadium. It will be the site of the curling competitions in 2022. The shape of Water Cube inspired from the natural formations of soap bubbles and cells. It has been praised as a magic water cube since it can decorate with natural iridescent light. In the evening, people might feel pleasant and leisure when they watch these buildings which display colorful lights casting a bright and dazzling sea world.

They are unparalleled and unprecedented landmarks in Beijing. They hold thousands of competitions insides the stadium but also attracts millions of visitors to appreciate remarkable buildings in China.

Yes everything was spectacular and fascinating very professional and prompt services. There were beautiful places to explore and to see in the 4 hours that we had. The comfort and beauty of the China was incredible, The history, culture and way of life of the local people we bumped into during the layover was beyond our expectations. Hiking on the Great wall after driving through a small remote countryside was very relaxing and rejuvenating. It was the best trip ever to experience on a few hours.

We had not previously used a travel agency for touring. The crew including the driver and tour guide were really funny, friendly and knowledgeable. Despite having limited time we still had free time allowing for shopping and grabbing a meal and drinks. Highly recommend this layover in Beijing.

Booking from South Africa on ChinaTour.net was so quick and easy, however I had to mail customer service as I had not received my confirmation within the 48 hours that the original mail had stated. Once done I received confirmation for all my train and internal flights within 20 minutes of sending the mail. I would highly recommend this website for booking trips through China and i will use it again in future.

Well worth it! Jenny was really nice and incredibly helpful with the immigration process after airport personnel originally escorted to the wrong area and didn’t want to allow leaving the airport. She takes great photos! Beautiful views and fun to take the toboggan down. Wasn’t too crowded on this day - and definitely worth doing with a 7 hour layover. Nice car and driver too.
