Chikan Old Town

Introduction

Situated at the center of Kaiping City on the northern bank of Tanjiang river and on the western edge of the Pearl River, this old town takes you back in time 300 years ago. It was established in the Qing Dynasty and was controlled by Emperor Shunzhi. Walking in the streets gets many tourists nostalgic featuring western and eastern style buildings to the 1980s brought into existence by overseas Chinese natives in the most unique blend.

Its location by the riverside resulted in the development of an emigration center as well as a maritime hub and a market center that immensely remains unmodernized and has a sense of authentic rural life. Movie lovers and Chinese drama enthusiasts find heaven setting foot on grounds that were movie sets for their local shows.

Major attractions and activities to do on a visit

This is the perfect place to make a visit if you want to experience how well Chinese and Western architecture blend harmoniously. The defensive multiple floor fortification of Diaolou brings out how to different designs can mate to create the most picturesque scene.

Get to see the Movie Town leading to a street full of old stores where movie sets were shot from made up of ancient buildings of European descent. Here you can explore and feel like you are in a movie scene. There is also a building with drawings on its wall creating 3D effects providing an actual location for brag-worthy photos and moments.

Photographers will have a whole selection of photo moments in the whole town because each corner of the town is as ostentatious as it can get. Fascinating mansions, Chinese blockbuster location sets and waterfront many more to explore and capture.

There are also two major libraries in the town that were both financed by Chinese natives living in diaspora in the 1920s. The Chinese nationals who financed the construction of the libraries were competitive and belonged to two different clans: the Situ and the Guan. Their aim to outdo each other is evident by the magnificence of the architectural complexes set up.

You cannot leave the town without tasting delicious local dishes like clay pot rice, a favorite for both locals and foreigners and also the tasty tofu jiao.
