Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden

Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden (KFBG) is formerly known as Kadoorie Experimental and Extension Farm or Kadoorie Farm for short, was originally set up for aiding poor farmers in the New Territories in Hong Kong. It later shifted its focus to promote biodiversity conservation in Hong Kong and south China, and greater environmental awareness. The Farm was built in a valley with streams, woodlands and terraces in 1956 by the Kadoorie Agricultural Aid Association. The farm attracts about 3000 to 5000 visitors per week.
The KFBG site near Lam Tsuen, Tai Po, nine kilometers of road wind their way up around organic farming terraces, botanic gardens and native forest to the summit of the mountain, Kwun Yum Shan, at over 1800ft above sea level. KFBG's three core programs - Nature Conservation, Holistic Education and Sustainable Living - are constantly evolving as they address different aspects of the challenge to live in harmony with nature. In addition to the many on-site courses, workshops and special events that have been developed for the education and upliftment of visitors, KFBG's activities extend throughout Hong Kong and into South China and other parts of the region.
KFBG has a deep-set valley between two ridges, with a stream running steeply down through the forest. On the slopes there are forest, theme gardens, vegetable terraces, 8km of walking trails, 9km of roads, and conservation and educational facilities.
The theme gardens were designed and planted from the 1960's onwards, and through planting, natural process and protection from fire, what was once barren scrubland is now mature forest. Visitors are welcome.
Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden has outdoor activities that will appeal to the whole family. The conservation centre’s paths take you wandering through vegetable gardens, greenhouses of beautiful flowers and plants, and scores of different animals. But it’s more than just a pretty face; the farm has also pioneered organic growth methods in Hong Kong, and helped introduce local strains of pigs and chickens, which you can see there.
Just inside the main gate, you can get a taste of what the old farming days of Hong Kong were like by visiting the Farm Museum, which features fascinating pictures and old farming implements.
Follow signs in the lower part of the farm to visit small pools housing waterfowl, including flamingos, and to check out deer in an enclosure. The farm extends up the side of the mountain and its higher reaches can be accessed by shuttle bus. If you’re keen for some sweeping views of the countryside, head to the top near the Kadoorie Brothers’ Memorial Pavilion. This area also features a wood and scrubland, which is a conservation area. If you are lucky, you just might see porcupines, pangolin or barking deer, although the best time to see them is at dusk as they’re mostly nocturnal.
