Tai O Fishing Village lies on west Lantau Island in the New Territories and is the most famous fishing village in HK. Tai O Fishing Village is famous for rivers, shacks above water, ancient temples and various seafood. Tai O Fishing Village built on water is repute as the "Venice of Hong Kong". Different from the busy life in Hong Kong Island, the life in Tai O Fishing Village seems simpler and more relaxing.

　　Tai O Fishing Village is an old fishing village. Tai O Fishing Village is famous for producing salt in Hong Kong with one hundred years. Because the salt market has declined, Many Mangroves were planted instead. Nowadays,Tai O Fishing Village is famous for the beautiful view of mangroves.

　　From the 1920s to the 1940s, the war period in Mainland China, many refugees from the mainland escaped to Tai O Fishing Village. Due to a great fire on July 2nd, 2000, the Hong Kong government worked hard to restore the fishing village to its origin. In December, 2006, the Tai O was listed as one of the top ten landscapes in Hong Kong. The life in old way and the beautiful environment are both ideal for tourists domestically and internationally.

　　Shacks built by the riverside is one key attraction of Tai O Fishing Village. The shacks are connected by numerous wooden passages, corridors and small bridges. Only by passing through different corridors, the residents in the shacks can reach the streets on the bank. The shacks are supported by many wooden piles with a height of 10 feet (3 meters)covering with wooden flooring. There is a wooden stairway leading down to the water. People can fetch water, wash clothes, or get on a boat from the stair way.

　　There are many ancient temples in Tai O Fishing Village. The Temple of General Guan Yu is on the central square. The temple was constructed during the Ming Dynasty

　　The Dragon Boat Race was held every year during the Dragon Boat Festival and very interesting and popular. There is a legend regarding this festival. There was a terrible plague broke out in the town hundreds of years ago. The gods in temples sent out small boats fixed with dragon boat. Local fishermen drove these boats and toured around the rivers for chasing the plague away. The plague soon end and the custom has been handed down since then. Every year during the Dragon Boat Festival, people hold ceremonies for praying the happiness and safety.

　　There are many delicious seafood too including salted fish, salted egg yolks, fish maws, fried shrimp, crab and squid, steamed fish with strips of ginger, ginger milk curd, rice with chicken and shrimp paste.
