Century Clock

Introduction

Situated in old Jiefang retractable Bridge west of Tianjin Railway Station, the Century Clock stands 40 meters high and weighs 180 tons. It was built in the year 2000 and on that day January 1st there was a bell rang to usher in the new millennium. The large face of the clock is surrounded by bronze sculptures of the 12 signs of the Zodiac and has two large arms with the sun and the moon on each arm. Aries is set at the top of the clock in the 12 o’clock position because the sheep symbolizes good luck in China and libra at the bottom symbolizing fairness. The combination of these signs is a means of integrating western culture and Chinese culture.
