The Yangtze Three Gorges
The Three Gorges region is a scenic area along the Yangtze River in China with a total length of approximately 200 km. Although it is primarily famous for its scenery, the Three Gorges region is historically and culturally an important region in China, including Qutang Gorge, Wu Gorge, and Xiling Gorge.
The westernmost Qutang Gorge, extends for about 8 kilometers between Chijia and Baiyan mountains face each other from opposite sides of the Yangtze. These landthe Kuimen Gatethe upstream entrance to the Three Gorges, like the “throat” of Sichuan Province.
Wu Gorgethe middle gorge, is 45 kilometers in length from the Daning River in the west to Guangdukou in the east. This is the longest and most complete of the three, and is often called the “Great Gorge". It is renowned for its remote and peaceful landscape beauty and for its changing clouds and rain. The 12 peaks of the Wushan Mountains that flank the Yangtze stand like a continuous screen, a landscape to stir the spirit.
The easternmost Xiling Gorge consists of two sections. The easterly one stretches 15 kilometersthe Bingshubaojian Gorge at Xiangxivia the Niuganmafei Gorge, and ends in the Kongling GorgeThe20 kilometers from the Dengying Gorge to the Huangmao Gorge at Nanjinguan. Between the two lies the Miaonan Wide Valleythe longest valley in the Tree Gorges area.
The Yangtze Three Gorges presents a scene of boundless variety with the magnificence of Qutang Gorge, the elegance of Wu Gorge, theof Xiling Gorge as well as the primitive simplicity and the mysteriousness of the Daning River, and Shennong Stream, which flow into the great valley. The whole landscape is so kaleidoscopic.
