Nuohei Ethnic Yi Village

Nuohei Village belongs to Guishan Town, Stone Forest Yi Autonomous County, Kunming City, Yunnan Province. It is located in the west of Guishan Town, 4 kilometers from the town government. The traffic is very convenient, 32 kilometers from the county town.

Nuohei Village is located in the karst geomorphic development area. The nearby mountains are mostly stone mountains. Ancient villagers chiseled stones from flat area and built villages leaning against the mountains. Nuohei dwelling is a closed stone-wood building. It uses purple-red painted wood to make beams, doors and windows. The outer walls are built with stone slabs and blocks. The inner walls are painted with lime. The roof is covered with flat tiles and tube tiles. The layout of residential buildings is two floors upstairs and downstairs, three square rooms and two ear rooms. Nuohei Village faces with the famous Laogui Mountain, surrounded by green hills. In the village, behind almost every household's house, there are several hundred-year-old trees, thin and dense branches and leaves stretching on the slate house, most of which are planted with flourishing golden bamboo in front of the house.

Nuohei Village still maintains a very pure Sani culture. There are more than 600 people in the village, only 25 of them are Han and 1 of them is Zhuang, but they all can speak Yi. They celebrate the traditional festivals of the Yi people together and abide by the ancient customs and habits of the Yi people. The customs, festivals and entertainment are all manifestation of the simplicity and enthusiasm of Yi people.

Mizhi festival is a sacrificial day for Sani people to pray for the prosperity of human beings and animals and the abundance of grain. There is an open area at the village entrance. The villagers use stone to build a round stage in the middle of the open area. When there are festival celebrations or leisure farming, the arts teams in the village will wear traditional ethnic costumes and perform traditional Sani dance here.

Nuohei Village was built in Jiaqing in the Qing Dynasty (1816 A.D.). It was the ancient post road of Horse Caravan from Luxi to Kunming. During the period of warlord period, bandits ran rampant. In order to safeguard the village, local villagers build stone walls to maintain the village with four opened gates, five artillery towers were built and rattan bars were planted on the wall.
